Getting ready for the first steering group meeting

In the last week or so we have been focusing on producing discussion/question documents to support the project steering group, which meets on the 10 Dec.  The first paper discusses what the purpose, remit and aspiration of the Fe Guild might be. The second document looks at wider workforce related membership bodies, both organisational and individual, such as the professional institutes, the Engineering Council, the Hospitality Guild and the HE Academy etc, with the aim of generating a debate about whether there are models, structures and missions,  which might be of interest to us.
PS although not yet finalised, the steering group will include the bodies that supported the initial development phase contract bid bid as listed here http://www.aoc.co.uk/en/fe-guild-consultation-project

I hope to be able to share parts of these early papers more widely after the steering group meeting. In the meantime if anyone is familiar with a particular organisation, either inside or outside the sector, which they think might be of interest to the project then please do let us know.

We have also started to map the activities that are already taking place across the sector, which might be relevant to the Guild.  Hopefully this will allow us to understand what is happening, what resource is involved and how it is carried out. We can then try and find out what the sector view is about the importance of, and priority for, that particular activity. Again if you are aware of an important activity in the sector, which supports the wider workforce development and professionalism agenda, that you think we might not be know about please do lets us know.

So overall lots of balls in the air and questions at the moment.  Hopefully we will also start getting some useful feedback from the initial focus groups on the 17th and 18th December, which seem to have got a good cross section of attendees, and I am looking forward to hearing what people think.

Before Christmas we hope to be able to give you an early indication of the more formal consultation meeting, which we are planning for mid February, including trying to work around half term.

  1. The Action for ESOL manifesto came out of an attempt to define professional values, which I think has relevance to FE in general: http://actionforesol.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/ESOL-manifesto-leaflet-v4b-online.pdf

On a similar note, an organisation which may be relevant when considering professionalism is NATECLA - http://www.natecla.org.uk/

    I hope that's useful.
